Effects of Well Water & Mari the Studio

Water. It is vital to our survival and makes up almost 3 quarters of our body weight. It flushes out the toxins within our bodies and keeps us alive.  Our recommended intake is 6 – 8 glasses a day in order to keep us healthy.  But could your water be preventing you from having beautiful hair?

Many homes in Fairfield County have no municipal water lines and therefore must use well-water.  Some prefer well water due to the fact that it has a lower cost than city water with no monthly bills, and that it’s filtered without any chemicals. However, here at Mari the Studio, we’ve seen the effects well water can have on hair.

We often get clients who come in to our studio complaining of limp, dull and discolored hair, saying their scalp feels dry and that the hair is lacking shine and bounce.  More often than not, these hair symptoms are caused by well-water that contains minerals which, over time, can attach to the hair and cause intense build-up.  Some minerals found in well-water that might have adverse effects are calcium, iron, copper, magnesium and lead.

These minerals can have frustrating effects on your hair including interference with your color.  Minerals such as copper and iron can give blonde hair a greenish tone, make red hair look copper, and cause dark hair to tint darker, while other minerals such as lead and magnesium can inhibit the processing of professional hair color.

How can you prevent this from happening to your own luscious locks? There are a few options that we can help you with here at Mari the Studio.

One is by requesting a clarifying treatment to add before any hair service. This treatment is an intense cleanser that sufficiently removes copper, iron and other minerals which may be wreaking havoc on your mane.  It will help eliminate any build-up which may interfere with your color service and ensure an even, beautiful result. It also contains a heavy concentration of chelating elements that envelop the minerals on your hair to make them soluble and easily rinsed away.

The other option we suggest is to use a clarifying shampoo, such as Redken Cleansing Cream, in alternation with your regular shampoo. The shampoo contains similar ingredients as the treatment including those chelating elements to rid the hair of minerals, product build-up or other impurities as well as fruit acids to strengthen the hair shaft and add shine. Wash your hair with this shampoo as little as once a week, or every other week and combine with the occasional clarifying treatment and you will maintain your healthy, shiny locks.

Cheers!

Adrienne & Kelly

Welcome back to Mari the Blog. By now, you must be aware that Mari the Studio is named after our master stylist and owner, Mari Sherman.  But what you may not know is that our staff is expanding!

Adrienne has been Mari’s assistant for the last year and a half. In her time here, she has been advancing her skills and been an apprentice to Mari, taking one on one guidance from her.  Adrienne is skilled in color, cuts and takes great pride in her work.  We’re very happy to see her now taking clients of her own!

Adrienne’s prices for women’s haircuts are $50, single process colors (including a complimentary glaze) are $70 and a wash & blow dry is $35.  (Please call or email for all other service price inquiries). Mari the Studio is also offering 20% off of Adrienne’s services to all clients with a valid college ID!

As Adrienne has grown with us here, more people have been requesting her and she has begun to develop a loyal clientele.  In order for her to continue styling here, she needed a replacement to take over the day to day tasks as an assistant to Mari and make way for another young stylist to begin learning.  In July, Mari the Studio hired Kelly, a recent graduate from Ricci’s Academy of Cosmetology, to begin assisting and taking over for Adrienne.

Kelly has tremendous enthusiasm for the hair industry and after only a few short months she has won her way into our hearts and also those of our clients.  So at your next appointment, please give Kelly a warm hello, and don’t forget to tell your friends that Adrienne is now available for all hair services!

Cheers!
